Nottingham

Nottingham is in central England and known as the homeland of Robin Hood. The region is rich in coal and has many coal mines which are at present shut. It also has thriving industries that manufacture lace, textiles, bicycles, leatherwear, chemical and pharmaceutical products et al. It is an important cultural and scholarly centre.

There are two major universities as well as museums, galleries, a library etc. Of particular interest are its monuments which date to the 15th and 17th centuries. It is also a top shopping destination, with the main commercial streets being around Old Market Square.

The town has strong touristic appeal due to its connection with the popular legend of the folk hero Robin Hood. His exploits, antics and adventures have been recorded in books and on film. Nearby Sherwood Forest is associated with the popular folk hero, as the woods from where he and his merry men emerged to do their daring deeds.   There is a statue erected in his honour outside Nottingham castle.
